Sidon (in some places in the A. V., Zidon), si-don (Heb.)–lier-in-wait; providing, i. e., as for a journey; catching of fish; fishery; fishing; hunter; trapper; beast of prey.

a Son of Canaan (Gen. 10:15). b A city of the Canaanites (Gen. 10:19), afterward allotted to Asher. The Asherites failed to drive out the Canaanitish inhabitants (Judg. 1:31). Sidon and Tyre are mentioned together in Joel 3:4, and in the New Testament (see Matthew 11:21; 15:21).

Meta. The signification here is a great increase of ideas in the animal phase of thought or of being in the individual (lier-in-wait, fishery, fishing, hunter, trapper, beast of prey). (See TYRE for a further explanation of Sidon.)
